This garden house at Rishra belonged to Shri Sarat Chandra Bose, the elder brother of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It is believed that Netaji himself may have set foot in this house, which lends it considerable historical importance (http://amritmahotsav.nic.in/district-reopsitory-detail.htm?22957). According to Police File No. 24 preserved in the Police Museum of Kolkata, after Netaji’s Great Escape in 1941, this house was used by the Bose family to maintain contact with members of the Japanese consulate in anticipation of receiving messages from Netaji.
It was in this very house that Sarat Bose met the Japanese Consul General Okazaki. On the day of their first meeting, the Consul was driven to the house by Dr. Sisir Kumar Bose. Later records also indicate that Consul Ota and his wife came several times to meet Sarat Bose at this house. To avoid suspicion from British intelligence, Mrs. Ota would often wear a sari to appear as though she were attending a family gathering (Source: Mahanishkraman — Sisir Kumar Bose, Kolkata: Ananda Publishers). Such events contribute to the house's status as a silent witness to the glorious concluding chapter of India’s struggle for independence.
